Why a page count is not a length

Ask how long a book is and you will be told its page count — a number that depends on font size, trim size and margins, and which changes between editions of the identical text. It tells you almost nothing.

Every figure here is computed from the actual text of a public-domain edition: words counted, sentences counted, syllables counted, readability formulas applied. Nothing is copied from a publisher's listing, and no text from any book is reproduced on this site — these are measurements, not extracts.

Word counts do legitimately vary between sources depending on which edition is measured and what gets stripped first. The method page spells out exactly what was counted, so you can judge any disagreement rather than guess at it.
